ABOUT THE BOOK

Rodwell Richards is a family man living with his wife and three children in Foxton, Lincolnshire. This is about to change. Assassinated in his sleep he wakes to find himself in another world. As though Rodwell wasn’t already coping with enough, just in dealing with “rebirth”, he is soon being pursued as a murdering terrorist across the landscapes of Axa-Goranas. It is hard for Rodwell to acknowledge that he has no realistic hope of ever seeing his family again. When his new love, Lucy, is tortured and left to die, Rodwell is finally forced to let his past go, and do all he can to defeat those who threaten his new existence. Rodwell’s new home is, in scientific terms, a large saucer-shaped asteroid, rather than a true planet. Goranas sits under a pulsar sun, which by its rotation about its poles provides familiar periods of night and day. Technologies are not much different from those of the Earth, but nevertheless everything is unfamiliar enough to make Arrivals' early weeks bewildering. The native population's telepathic skills are a source of particular grief. AVAILABLE AT AMAZON

ABOUT THE BOOK

This is the standalone sequel to Another Space in Time. The new reader isn’t disadvantaged by having missed the earlier story. Rodwell is seen as very much a local hero as he continues his new life on Axa-Goranas. He has now more or less come to terms with the ridiculously unbelievable idea that one can be re-born, and even into another dimension. Life is becoming almost routine as Rodwell looks forward to the birth of his new child. Married to a young, beautiful wife, having a tolerable job and living in an idyllic environment, life seems different, even approaching perfect—that is, until the police start looking to take advantage of his resemblance to his terrorist twin brother in order to penetrate a terrorist organisation. What were once mere character flaws start to have an increasing influence on Rodwell’s activities as he struggles to deal with the impossible demands of the police, and the potent dangers of mixing with terrorists. Suddenly all those who Rodwell knows and loves are in danger, including his new baby daughter. Will the growing harshness in his nature help him to survive, or is the job too big even for Rodwell this time? Arthur Fieldman, Carlton Heath, Nethertown, Lincolnshire. AVAILABLE AT AMAZON

Alexander the Great, Adapted from the play of Jean Racine

Paperback: ISBN 978-0956293701
eBook: ISBN 978-0956293756

ABOUT THE BOOK

This play is set during Alexander's military campaign in the Punjab, in what is now an area of Pakistan. The story is centred on the relationships of love and hate between the kings Porus and Taxiles, Queen Axiana, Taxiles' sister Cleophila and Alexander himself. The action is set before and during the bloody battle of Hydaspes. There is considerable scope for varied dramatic adaptations for all ages and abilities in the tragic structure of this story. In particular I think it is one of the easiest of classical plays to mould into an exciting school or college production. There is little stage direction, leaving the action almost entirely to the minds of production teams, as is the case with all of Jean Racine’s neo-classical works. AVAILABLE AT AMAZON

Esther and Athaliah, Two Plays Adapted from Those of Jean Racine

Paperback: ISBN 978-0956293718
eBook: ISBN 978-0956293763

ABOUT THE BOOK

Esther and Athaliah are two plays based on biblical texts, which have strong principle female roles. They were considered very modern in their day, as up to that time males had by custom played all the members of the cast of both sexes. The plays were written for the girls of St. Cyr School, which had been established by the Marquise de Maintenon, the second wife of Louis XIV. Esther is about the Jewish "princess" of that name, and her rise from the pitiful serfdom of the Jews exiled in Persia. Her status, and that of all the Jews, is lifted when she eventually marries King Ahaserrus. The main subplot is woven around the bitter rivalry between Haman & Mordecai. Athaliah is the story of Queen Athaliah, who believes she has destroyed all the rival members of Judah's Royal family, and concerns her plans to destroy the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. With the help of the High Priest of Baal and a mercenary army she leads a final assault. AVAILABLE AT AMAZON

Suitors & Wasps

Paperback: ISBN 978-0956293725
eBook: ISBN 978-0956293749

ABOUT THE BOOK

The classical play Wasps was written in the City-State of Athens in 422 BC. Plays in this period were generally highly political and satirical, providing a medium for communicating opinion and news. Aristophanes plays were harshly critical of his enemies, often cynical and sometimes crude. They were written in an atmosphere a million miles away from the 17th Century aristocratic French royal courts, in which Jean Racine wrote 2000 years later. Despite the huge cultural gap neoclassical scholars were constantly referring back to classical works and none more so than was Racine. He, having had his own private run-ins with the judiciary, was inspired by the Wasps to base his only "comedy" on that earlier play. The result was "Les Plaideurs", which is often translated as "the Litigants", and which I prefer to call "Suitors". Readers of all levels often considered the connection between the plays to be weak. Yet they are constantly studied with reference to each other. This is in no small measure due to the fact that Racine felt indebted to Aristophanes for his plot. Everyone is free to make the judgment for themselves as to whether comparison is worthwhile. AVAILABLE AT AMAZON
